// Abstract // The present article attempts to analyze the fundamental role that the principle of the common good had in the revolt of the Comuneros in Castile. From a methodological point of view the author starts by examining the history of the concepts, the institutional history and the political theory. The common good is conceived as the dominant political maxim of the movement. It is used by the communities in revolt as both a rallying cry and as a justification for the foundation of the confederate alliance and is at the same time the key concept in their claim that the cities should play a greater role in the political affairs of the kingdom. It also has a primary role in the area of propaganda as it represents an essential aspect of the self-perception of the Castilian communities, who see themselves as active participants promoting the common good, rejecting the private and hereditary conception of the State defended by the royalist grandees. The author therefore suggests that the Comunidades should be seen as a movement of conditional resistance to the royal government with quasi-republican aspirations, and their leading protagonists as zealots of the common good, defenders of the liberty of the communes in opposition to the landowning nobility to help to strengthen and restore the crown land in Castile.</subfield>
