<dc:description>After delineating the problem of action , i.e. the problematic aspiration for the moral agent of effectively putting into practice what he has desired and decided, the essay engages in a critic of humanism, whenever the latter obliviates the dramatic dimension of human action, which is always somehow affected by emotion. In a third part the essay points to the necessity of keeping asking about the way in which the act of morality within the person comes about while embracing its twofold goal-conscious and emotive dimension. It claims the need of thinking these two aspects as belonging to a single phenomenological experience, specially in view of the history of practical philosophy where in the jargon of Modernity- the conflict between (moral) reason and passions has hindered a satisfactory synthesis: already Ovid admitted melancholically «Video meliora proboque, deteriora sequor» ( I see and approve the better course, but I follow the worse ). In contemporary times the problem of motivation keeps hereof issuing moral philosophy a challenge. Reflections as those of Cardinal Newman regarding the notional and real assent throw the quest for a truly appreciation of the practical bond between moral goals and motivation in the right direction: the one that does not oppose motions and moral reasoning.</dc:description>
