<dc:description>Introduction. At present, there are 8 million senior adults living in Mexico city. United Nations Organization (ONU) estimates that if this actual trend continue, in the year 2025, senior citizen population in Latin America and the Caribbean will be 14.1% of the World population, increasing up to 22.6% in 2050, when one of each four citizens will be in the group of more than 65 years old. Nowadays, society trends relegate senior citizens, situation that is cause of low self-esteem, physical decline and limitations of scopes for social participation, reaching to a dependent state which sometimes is cause of abuse and depression Material and methods. From the statistical information generated by the System of Attention of Quejas Médicas (SAQMED), nonconformities taken care of in CONAMED were reviewed during period 1996-2008 and their general characteristics by means of descriptive statistic were analyzed. Results. Between 1996 and 2008, 2592 complaints were attended in the Conciliation Area of the National Comission of Medical Arbitration (CONAMED), all of these of people 65 years old and older: 37% were in disagreement with the surgical treatment, 36% with the medical treatment and 18% disagreed with the diagnosis; 13% considered inadequate treatment, 11% non satisfactory results or treatment, 10% wrong diagnosis or deferred surgical treatment and 6% for postponed medical treatment. In 72% of all cases mal praxis was not detected, but it was positive in the remaining 28%. The specialties with higher complaints were: Emergencies, Ophthalmology, General Surgery, Urology, Family Practice, Orthopedics and Dentistry. Conclusions. Facing this popular tendency, it is necessary create actions which can be useful to �teach how to grow old gracefully�, to learn how to prevent illness, improve his life style and eating habits and that the health team keeps in mind and consider the natural changes of old age</dc:description>
<dc:description>Introducción. Hoy, viven en México ocho millones de adultos mayores. La Organización de las Naciones Unidas (ONU) calcula que de continuar las tendencias actuales, en el 2025 los adultos mayores en América Latina y el Caribe constituirán el 14.1% de la población del planeta, incrementándose hasta el 22.6% en 2050, cuando uno de cada cuatro habitantes pertenecerá al grupo de población de más de 65 años. La sociedad actual tiende a relegar a los ancianos y esta situación condiciona baja autoestima, deterioro físico y limitación de ámbitos de participación social, llegando a la dependencia y en no pocos casos al maltrato; lo que puede degenerar en depresión. Material y métodos. A partir de la información estadística generada por el Sistema de Atención de Quejas Médicas (SAQMED), se revisaron las inconformidades atendidas en CONAMED durante el periodo 1996-2008 y se analizaron sus características generales mediante estadística descriptiva. Resultados. Entre 1996 y 2008 se atendieron en el Área de Conciliación de la CONAMED, 2592 quejas de personas con edad de 65 años y mayores. 37% por inconformidad con el tratamiento quirúrgico, 36% con el tratamiento médico y 18% con el diagnóstico; 13% consideró inadecuado el tratamiento, 11% por resultados o tratamiento no satisfactorios, 10% por diagnóstico erróneo o diferimiento en el tratamiento quirúrgico y 6% por diferimiento en el tratamiento médico. En 72% de los casos no se identificó mala práctica y en el 28% sí. Las especialidades reportadas con mayor frecuencia fueron: urgencias médicas, oftalmología, cirugía general, urología, medicina familiar, ortopedia y odontología. Conclusiones. Ante esta tendencia poblacional, es necesario lograr acciones encaminadas a �educar para enseñar a envejecer con dignidad�, aprender en lo individual a prevenir enfermedades, mejorar el estilo de vida y la alimentación y que el equipo de salud considere los cambios naturales asociados al envejecimiento</dc:description>
