<dc:description>The terms "dialogue" and "occupation" are explored in this paper in terms of the fundamental nature of human language in contexts of use, in particular asymmetric power contexts. The existing theoretical framework of discourse ethics, in the well known form given to it by Jürgen Habermas, is re-analysed in terms of modern linguistics and pragmatics. In particular, the paper reviews four types of validity claims. Habermas's early notion of Verständlichkeit is reinstated under the label "comprehensibility" and related to ideas from sociolinguistics. The various notions associated with "understanding" and their German translation equivalents are also considered. The three other Habermasian claims are re-cast in terms of research in Cognitive Linguistics conducted over the last three decades. One aim of the paper is to enhance the role of cognitive approaches in critical discourse studies. But the more general aim is to strengthen Habermas's argument that validity claims are inherent in some sense in human language and that these claims are of an ethical nature, to the extent that they presuppose and demand ethical justification through dialogue. The paper re-affirms the inference that if this is the case then such dialogue is a human righ</dc:description>
