Descripción:: UNESCO endorses the Earth Charter as an educational instrument within the framework of the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development. This article trawls through the Earth Charter to pick out the axiological axes of education for a citizenry committed to the values and goals of sustainability. Three basic principles are stressed: planetary human identity, co-responsibility and compassion. The first of them requires incorporating nature into the educational process of identity construction and the acceptance of three complementary dimensions: the feeling of singularity, the feeling of identification with the group (different groups) and the feeling of belonging to the community of life, i.e., the planet in its biological diversity. The four notes assigned by the Charter to the principle of co-responsibility (it should be universal, differentiated, synchronic and diachronic) make it possible to consider as moral actions almost any action performed by human beings: his/her relationship with other living things (not just fellow human beings), his/her role as a link in the species or the his/her footprint on physical nature; and his/her glocal responsibility (near environment and cosmic environment), which forces the individual to respond according to his/her own status, capability and possibilities, giving priority to a strict application of the precautionary principle of «Do no harm». Lastly, the consequences for the education of the value of critical, committed compassion, which the Charter proposes as an axiological axis of human behaviour, refer us to the realm of moral education: the training of one�s moral judgment, the development of empathy, abilities for dialogue, active listening and social participation, critical capacity, respect for life (be it human or in all its diversity of forms) and the experience of suffering. The Charter is an instrument of educational sensitisation, but above all, it is a vital guide for the moral education of citizens in a model whose prime aim is the contribution to sustainable development in all its dimensions.; UNESCO avala la Carta de la Tierra como instrumento educativo en el marco de la Década de Naciones Unidas por la Educación para el Desarrollo Sostenible. En este artículo se identifican, al hilo de su texto, los ejes axiológicos de la educación de una ciudadanía comprometida con los valores y metas de la sostenibilidad. Se destacan tres principios básicos: la identidad humana planetaria, la co-responsabilidad y la compasión. El primero de ellos exige incorporar la naturaleza al proceso formativo de construcción de la identidad y aceptar en él tres dimensiones complementarias: el sentimiento de singularidad, el de identificación con el grupo (diferentes grupos) y el de pertenencia a la comunidad de vida que es el planeta en su diversidad biológica. Respecto al segundo, las cuatro notas que la Carta atribuye al principio de co-responsabilidad �universal, diferenciada, sincrónica y diacrónica� permiten contemplar como acciones morales prácticamente todas aquellas que el ser humano realiza: su relación con los restantes seres vivos (no sólo sus congéneres), su papel como eslabón de la especie, o su huella sobre la naturaleza física; y su responsabilidad glocal (entorno próximo y cósmico), que le obliga a responder de ellas en la medida del propio estatus, capacidad y posibilidades, dando prioridad a una estricta aplicación del principio precautorio (evitar dañar). Finalmente, las consecuencias para la educación del valor de la compasión crítica y comprometida, que la Carta propone como eje axiológico del comportamiento humano, nos remiten al ámbito de la educación moral: la formación del juicio moral, el desarrollo de la empatía, las habilidades para el diálogo, la escucha activa y la participación social, la capacidad crítica, el respeto por la vida �humana y en su diversidad de formas�, y la experiencia del sufrimiento. La Carta es un instrumento de sensibilización educativa pero, sobre todo, una guía imprescindible para la educación moral de los ciudadanos en un modelo cuya urgencia es contribuir al desarrollo sostenible en todas sus dimensiones.
